Who is going to the playa this year?

Okay... out of the 19 people on this tribe who are interested in this 'Beyond Burningman' concept... who is actually going to the playa this year?

I am NOT.

Obviously.

I made a big deal about my personal opposition to the specific festival that takes place in BRC. Although I had an awesome time when I went in 03, I not only would be hypocritical to go to this festival -- but I also simply feel that the festival is going to kinda suck this year...

... just a feeling.

So... out of you who ARE going... do you think it might be a good idea to help spread the idea of a networked alternative to 'Burningman' as a festival?

Obviously this tribe is a proto-type version of this... however, in the long run I really don't care if this tribe vanishes completely to be replaced by bigger and better things.

I'm fairly notorious on tribe.net and I am assuming this will spred to burningman. Certain people will probably try to shun anybody who even MENTIONS that they know me... so... uh... hmmm... how can we get this idea to pick up some steam?

My theory is this:

Burningman this year will be BY FAR the WORST ever. There will be more rape, violent acid freak-outs and HOPEFULLY some terrorist attacks or something insane. Haha... at which point more and more people will begin asking themselves

'What is beyond burningman?'

However... for those who are STILL not smart enough to come to this conclusion on their own, we might want to advertise.

i shall be going. in the muttle i saw more light than dark. the dark i steered away from though i was at times quiet attracted to bits of it. if you were anywhere near Bluehouse then i'm not surprised in your perspective. i know a few that were with you that year and they want nothing to do with that 'ickiness'- as it's been described.

hmm. i don't think of BM as a 'festival' but rather a symposium and series of seminars, and dare i say it.... a 'walk-about' of sorts. but that's just me. through all the depravity i still see such incredible ingenuity....and a glimmer of hope- even in the face of APPARENT pointless waste and hedonism. i love BM (and my tribe here in Seattle as well) because like a moth to candle, it attracts those that might actually have a clue...... HAAAAHAAA! LIKE YOU SAM!

    a suggestion?

you could go and you wouldn't be a hypocrit. continue with developing your ideas as an alternative ADDITION to our fucked up society. consider that BRC could be the place to begin actual manifestation of your ideas. you want peeps to consider your ideas? by about Wed or Thur there will be plenty of peeps tired of the animals that are also attending. by Fri and Sat you might have a quite a following. eight months ago and almost four more to go is a pretty big break from the reality of the sitch. so get them in the moment. and in the weeks following BM this year.

now go buy your ticket! <snicker>

Anywhere near bluehouse? I was like the bluehouse mascot in 2003... ;)

All that would all work except I'm eager to give up this idea as 'mine' because i don't think that it is... I think it is something that has been brewing in the collective unconscious while ignored by the masses. I just happen to be loud and unafraid to say anything to get my point across... I'm sure I am not the first person to say or type these words.

I don't want to burningman this year for a variety of reasons and I do not feel that it is technically possible for me to go without being a hypocrit. Any 'following' I could gain at burningman would be more shallow than a following who didn't even go this year in the first place... but really, I don't care for a 'following' in this area.

Rather, I want to spend this summer promoting myself as a musician/writer/artist... I simply won't have time.

Now... if somebody else wants me to help them write anything related to this -- I'm all yours... :)

I'll be going. I don't anticipate that this will be the worst year ever. There are a lot of things happening to reduce the amount of rape, and violence. The Rangers are very good at rapidly responding to problems.

I know a lot of people involved in trying to reduce violence at Burning Man, by providing awareness training, and teaching people how to notice predator types, and avoid them. Also, people are working on having safe places to get people to if the are feeling threatened. There are also places to take care of people having drug or environment induced freakouts. And, again, people watching things can quickly notify the Black Rock Rangers when they see problems brewing.

I find your statement that "HOPEFULLY [there will be] some terrorist attacks or something insane." to be kinda disturbing. The "Haha" doesn't make this statement any less disturbing. Why would you hope for something like this? Why would you even joke about hoping for something like this?

Well gee... maybe because I'm a blood spitting ass-hole? I cannot help you if you can't understand my sense of humor -- I saw the world trade center fall from my bedroom window if that makes a difference to you.

The fact that there is so much energy and effort being devoted to rape prevention is discouraging to me.

WHY IS THERE A NEED FOR THIS??? THAT IS SAD!

What's next? No smoking ANYTHING ANYWHERE?

      No running with scissors?

      No back talk?

'things happening to reduce the amount of rape, and violence.'

Sounds like a prescription drug -- helps the symptom, not the problem.

I will likely skip it for the first time in 7 years.
If I go, it will mainly be to meet people interested in what I am doing to create a more perminant autonimous zone.
And I will perform some public service things as well.

I would be skipping it not because I don't see it as a worthwhile thing. It is one of the most amazing spaces and grouping of folks in the world. A lot of people don't know what to do, and yah, many just want to party. And for many people it will serve to expand their ways of thinking...

It won't suck this year even if you are envisioning something better. :) It will of course be different and the same.
Better than following a band around, or focusing all your time on a consumtion based hobby yah?

I am very much liking the idea of baby burningman festivals. And even more powerful; people really implementing positive change in their lives. Living livcs of more creation than consumption, lives of more freedom than slavery.

Burning man is a pitre dish vacation experience for many, but they can build better ways of living in their job, families and homes too.

I am glad you are thinking about some new things! And maybe you will get a chance to create some even! Often it is harder to create something than it looks. There is so much conservation of reality!
Best of luck to us all.

I wil be going, owing to not being able to get my self there in 2002 and 2003 when i wanted to due to being stuck at university and not having the funds to fund a transatlantic jaunt. I feel to turn around now and appear disenfranchised with it would suggest a jadedness wich only comes with being able to say "i'e been coming here for dickity years and i personally blame so and so for ruining it" whcih is very prevalent to even such a realitive newcommer as myslef.

Althoug samuelroy, you make some very valid and well thought through points (I fear several people may utilise the patriot act bug and now label me as a troll for merely agreeing with you) and most of the enrichment burningman has brought to me has beren little to do with teh 7 days i spent on the play intotal but in becomming a very active amember of the london and european communities, enabling me to meet a whole range of creative and fabulous people who in turn have enabled me to develop my creative side.

Personally i think you would in no way be a hypocrit to attend this years burn. if you have ideas that you think should be spread then spread em, perhaps the playa you may find more receptive audience than on tribe and thus avoid name calling and attention whores, and allegations of being a troll/communist/terrorist delete as appropriate wouldn matter so much.

Its your festival as much as it is anyone elses.

And i for one would quite happily have a beer with you and listen to your ideas

      incidentaly
Nowhere is the european baby burn which is in its 2nd year with an expected 100 participants this year anyone who is interested www.euroburners.org
